چکیده

A homogenization framework is developed that accounts for the effect of size at the microor nanoscale. This is achieved by endowing the interfaces of the microor nanoscopic features with their own independent structure, using the theory of surface elasticity. Following a standard small-strain approach for the microscopic deformation in terms of the macroscopic strain tensor, a Hill-type averaging condition is used to link the two scales. A procedure for determining overall effective properties in the case of composites with elastic components and elastic material interfaces is presented. A special example of multilayered composites demonstrates the correlation between a material interface and a very thin interphase layer.

Numerical Simulation of a Hybrid Nanocomposite Containing Ca-CO3 and Short Glass Fibers Subjected to Tensile Loading

The tensile properties of multiscale, hybrid, thermoplastic-based nanocomposites reinforced with nano-CaCO3 particles and micro–short glass fibers (SGF) were predicted by a two-step, three-dimensionalmodel using ANSYS finite element (FE) software. Cylindrical and cuboid representative volume elements were generated to obtain the effective behavior of the multiscale hybrid composites. In the fir...

Investigation of Vacancy Defects on the Young’s Modulus of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites in Axial Direction via a Multiscale Modeling Approach

In this article, the influence of various vacancy defects on the Young’s modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) - reinforcement polymer composite in the axial direction is investigated via a structural model in ANSYS software. Their high strength can be affected by the presence of defects in the nanotubes used as reinforcements in practical nanocomposites. Molecular structural mechanics (MSM)/finite ...

Experimental comparison of thermal neutron absorption cross section in nano and micro particles

The neutron collision cross-section is important in neutron use for a specific job, such as neutron therapy or even in nuclear reactors. In calculating computational codes such as MCNP, only information from the neutron-to-mass collision information contained in the computational code library is used, in the case of nanoscale particles in contrast to the mass of materials and / or particulate m...

Hybrid molecular-continuum methods for micro- and nanoscale liquid flows

Many flows at microscale and below are characterised by an inherent multiscale nature and accurate numerical modelling of the phenomena involved is the cornerstone for enhancing the applicability of micro and nanofluidics in the industrial environment. This paper presents a hybrid molecular-continuum strategy named as point wise coupling for studying complex microand nanoscale flows. In this st...

Variational Methods for Biomolecular Modeling

Structure, function and dynamics of many biomolecular systems can be characterized by the energetic variational principle and the corresponding systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). This principle allows us to focus on the identification of essential energetic components, the optimal parametrization of energies, and the efficient computational implementation of energy variation or m...
